A good entry level fat tire bike, but room for improvements

The Alpha is a good entry level fat tire bike. It's not too heavy, frame and bar are aluminium. It's already a non threaded headset. The wheelset is fine, it is properly trued and the tires are good.

However, there's still room for improvements which wouldn't add much costs at production

    - the axle bearings had far too much tension on my bike, which limits the lifespan of the bearings and slows the bike down

    - the headset tension bolt had been tightened far too much (normally it's just 3 Nm)

    - the bottom bracket was mounted without any grease in the thread. If this is not corrected it will corrode into the frame over time and the frame can suffer damage if it has to be removed if it's worn one day

    - the gearing is unnecessary high. It's clear we will not see a 1 x 12 shifting in this price class, but the smallest gear is already too big to use it properly as a beach bike or at smaller hills. A smaller front chain ring would be a relatively production cost neutral solution, or a 14-34 mega range freewheel cassette (the original freewheel cassette is 14-28, but already Shimano). I retrofitted mine with the mega range cassette. The Tourney derailleur works fine, even if it's the entry level group set.

The original gearing would make sense on a road bike, but not on a fat tire bike which is never ridden that fast.

    - the brakes leave a lot room for improvements. It's clear we will not see a hydraulic disc brake from stock in this price class, but the JAK mechanical disc…

It was great while it lasted. Unfortunately build quality of some components are lacking.

I have had this bike for a year now and for the most part, I absolutely love it. The gearing isn't great for fat tyres (smaller 32t chain ring and 34t freehweel fixes this), . Unfortunately I'm on my second set of forks and they failed hard on the weekend.

The first forks arrived with a rusty steer tube (inner and outer), so REID provided great service and sent me a new set as soon as they could. They were slightly different looking, but the same colour and the right size...

I feel like I'm too old to recklessly jump a bike, but I do like to take this out to the local bush (often to take doggo for a walk).. I lifted the wheel slightly to get over a log and the fork taco'd. There were no signs leading up to that point that the fork was compromised, it just folded. 2 days later I'm sitting here feeling I have just been hit by a truck, missing my bike. This failure destroyed my brand new quad lock phone mount that I was trying out (phones good), and my hub axel, bearings and QR skewer.

This bike might be alright for a beach cruiser, but I can't in good faith recommend it for light trail riding unless you replace the fork with something a bit more substantial (I'm going chromoly).

    Hi Mick,

Unfortunately, it is evident from the photos that you made some home conversion to make this bike electric. This violates our warranty policy, and likely contributed to this accident.

I'm really sorry to hear you came off your bike. If you would like some assistance sourcing spare parts we'll be more than happy to help. Please feel free to email us at support@reidcycles.com.au
