This was a challenge of monumental proportions! The Reid Cycles team were attempting to ride the 3,500km from Perth to Melbourne in just 23 Days. While it's obviously a big physical challenge, the ride also tested the mental strength of these fun-loving characters. We're stoked to confirm they achieved their goals and had an amazing time!
Meet The Team
Sarah loves hiking, climbing, camping, surfing and more recently...cycling! From Yullingup and just 20 years old, Sarah works as an outdoor recreational instructor for schools and also as a tour guide for Ngilgi Caves. Sarah postponed her studies to join this adventure as she's always wanted to be a part of something sincere, worthwhile and beneficial for humanity.
Ben Ware (center) is a family man from Busselton and the leader of this group. He loves spending time with his family, running, camping, hiking and fishing. Ben cycles around 70km per day on his way to and from work at a Winery, which makes him the most serious 'cyclist' in the group. Ben tries to take on one big adventure per year.
Elijah Newton (right) is the youngest in the group at just 19. Elijah’s from Dunsborough and enjoys traveling, outdoors, rock climbing and music. Elijah has a couple of mates that have done this ride before to raise money for the Disabled Surfers Association and were his inspiration in taking this on.
Ben, Sarah and Elijah were attempting to knock over 3,500kms in just 23 days, meaning they had to average around 160km a day!
Their ride started from Reid Cycles in Perth on Saturday the 9th of May 2015, and they rolled into Reid Cycles’ Windsor store, Melbourne on Saturday the 30th of May 2015 - achieving their goal! On route they also swung by Reid Cycles in Adelaide for a quick pit stop and a few photos for the local press.
They didn't do this alone! They had a couple of great mates in a support vehicle shadowing them on their Cycle across Oz. The support vehicle caught up with them at several meeting points during the day, and the team set up camp each night. The lucky riders also had dinner on the table most nights as they rolled in!
Reid Cycles Support
When Ben first approached Reid Cycles for sponsorship we didn't hesitate in agreeing to help. We admired their sense of adventure and willingness to put in the hard yards to raise money for charity. We take great pride in knowing our bikes and accessories are helping these riders achieve the dream of cycling across Australia!
We provided each of the three Reid sponsored riders with an Osprey Elite and a bunch of related gear. The riders didn't have a single issue with their bikes on the entire ride other than a few flatties... even they were few and far between!
