At Reid Cycles, we love a good challenge and we love inspiring people to do something they never thought they could. From hundreds of applicants we chose three inspiring riders to lead Team Reid on the Around the Bay Challenge 2016.
As Melbourne's most iconic ride with a distance for everyone, Around the Bay is a great way for anyone and everyone to get fit, cycle more or even just challenge themselves.
Our Team Leader for the 160km distance is Nick. He's looking forward to rediscovering his love of cycling, get in shape and - after last year's failed attempt - actually complete Around the Bay. Find out more about Nick and follow his journey Around the Bay.
Nick will be riding the Vantage Endurance 2.0 - a serious road endurance weapon. If you're thinking about joining Nick on the 160km ride, check out our great range of road bikes to get you started.
Tell us a bit about yourself...
I’m working in Social Media Marketing at an agency on St Kilda Road. I’m lucky enough to live within walking distance of work, in beautiful Prahran with my partner. I’m juggling full-time work with my last semester of study - a Bachelor of Professional Communications at Monash University majoring in Public Relations.
How would you describe your current fitness level? What are your current views on leading a fit and healthy lifestyle?
I would describe myself as being of average fitness. I go to the gym 2-3 times a week, which is a big achievement as I used to workout 3-4 times a year! I believe I could do more - particularly with regards to cardio, and so the opportunity to prepare for the Around the Bay Challenge is a tremendous opportunity!
What is your cycling experience? What’s the furthest distance you've ever cycled?
The further I’ve ever cycled was probably about… 25km? I used to cycle from South Yarra to Springvale and back every day for work. However since purchasing a car, these good habits made way for bad. In the last two years I haven’t cycled nearly as frequently.
What do you hope to achieve by completing Melbourne’s most iconic ride? Why did you decide to take on this challenge?
I took up the challenge to rediscover my love of cycling. I’ve missed cycling through our beautiful city and wish to improve my fitness - and what better opportunity is there than to do this by preparing for Melbourne’s most iconic ride? If I’m to be successful, I’ll have to hone my diet and create good exercise habits - which hopefully will stick around even after the Challenge!
What are you most excited about when it comes to the Around the Bay Challenge 2016? What are your biggest fears?
My greatest fear is not reaching the end - getting too tired, falling off the bike, or letting the demons in my head get the better of me. What motivates and excites me is the prospect of actually pulling this off! It would mean not only setting and working towards a goal, but making great improvements to my wellness and lifestyle.
Why should people get involved in Around the Bay and join the Team Reid for your distance?
Melbourne is a city that loves to cycle - and for those like me who’ve given it a go, but haven’t pushed themselves - now is your chance! With the right equipment and attitude, a 160km cycle can become the new norm!
