With advances in battery technology meaning smaller, more powerful units; and motors getting smoother and more discrete - it’s no surprise everyone is getting on an ebike!

Electric bikes use a battery powered motor to give you pedal-assistance up to 25km/hr to help you ride further, with less effort so you can get there faster and in better shape.

The Blacktop is the perfect do-it-all electric bike for riders who want to take charge of their daily commute; or replace the car for weekend adventures and visiting friends.

Powering the new Blacktop 1.0 is a light and unobtrusive Bafang 250 watt electric motor positioned in the rear hub. This affordable option still keeps the centre of gravity low - for stable handling when navigating traffic or fast cornering.

The torque of the electric motor coupled with the Shimano 7-speed drivetrain will give you all the range you need for fast city riding or weekend touring.

The elegant frame-integrated battery pack is a fast-charging, lightweight 36 volt 10.4 Ah (374.4 Wh) unit that will help you cruise through up to 70 kilometres of pedal-assisted riding on a single charge. Just choose your power level on the handlebar mounted display unit and go!

A fast bike needs good stopping power, and the Blacktop is fitted with Tektro mechanical disc brakes so you are assured of reliable control - even when riding in the wet.

The Blacktop is available in unisex or a step-through WSD frame design. WSD or Women Specific Design is an approach to building bikes that considers female proportions to produce a bike more suited to a female rider.

Both configurations are optimised for a fast, smooth and controlled riding experience. And as becomes clear from the first pedal stroke - these bikes are also heaps of fun!

With considered details like internal cabling to keep everything neat, fitted full-length mudguards, a rear pannier rack and wide, comfortable 40 millimetre commuter tyres - this bike is ready to ride.

Key Features:

  • Hydroformed alloy frame with internal cabling to keep everything neat and safe.
  • Powered by Bafang 250W rear hub motor with discrete frame-integrated 36 volt, 10.4 Ah battery pack (374.4 Wh).
  • Choose your level of pedal assistance on the handlebar mounted LCD display and travel up to 70km on a single charge.
  • Trusted Shimano 7 speed gearing.
  • Tektro mechanical disc brakes for stopping power and control in all conditions.
  • Ready to ride and fitted with full-length mudguards, kickstand and rear pannier rack.

eBikes FAQ

Q. How far can I travel on a full charge?

The range you can expect depends on how hard the battery is working. This will be affected by factors like the weight of the rider, how much luggage you’re carrying, tyre pressure, hills/terrain, road condition, wind and the level of assistance or power setting you use.

We will list the distance you can expect to ride under ideal conditions in the product details section of each Electric Bike.

As a general guide though, the range varies from around 60km per full charge for our 10.4Ah battery hub motor eBikes, up to 100-120km+ for our Shimano Steps and 14Ah Ananda mid-mount eBikes. The dual-battery system on the KADe can even cover 150km+.

Q. How do I charge an Electric Bike and how long will it take?

Simply plug the charger into a standard wall socket at work or when you get home. To charge the battery from 0% to 80% will take 2 hours, 100% in 4 hours. Most of the time though you’ll just need to top up rather than completely refill. Charging times are similar for the Shimano, Bafang and Ananda systems.

Q. What are the benefits of a hub motor style eBike?

For commuting and touring electric bikes designed for use on roads and paths, rear hub motors offer a more discrete, lighter and more affordable choice over a mid-mount motor design.

Bafang are the largest rear hub eBike manufacturer in the world and growing rapidly in Europe and the US. The motor is light and unobtrusive at only 2.9 kg, recharge time is quick and the range is good. Considering how affordable these ebikes are, a new electric bike now makes a lot of sense for more people.

Q. What are the benefits of a mid-mount motor style eBike?

The mid-mount position offers more options in terms of gearing, smoother acceleration and lowers the centre of gravity of the bike giving a more stable ride over broken ground or when cornering. This benefit is really felt when off-road or riding at speed.

Mid-drive motors are especially preferred by riders looking for more torque when riding (perfect for pinch climbs on a Mountain Bike). Unlike a hub-drive motor, the mid-drive motor directly drives the crank instead of the wheel. This has the benefit of multiplying power and allowing the bike to better take advantage of existing gears.

Q. Can I ride an eBike in the rain?

Yes, all of these units are sealed and made for all-conditions riding.

Q. Can I switch off the motor and ride it like a normal bike?

Yes. Remove the battery pack and it will feel very much like a normal bike.

Q. What does 'Pedelec' mean?

The most popular electric bike system in Australia is the pedelec (or pedal assist) system. You ride a pedelec by pedalling as normal, while the electric motor adds power to each pedal stroke - flattening out the hills and getting you up to speed with much less effort.

Q. How much does it cost to charge an eBike?

It depends on the battery, but as an example:

The Shimano Steps system uses a 418Wh battery. At 30c/kWh x 0.418kWh = 12.5c for a full charge. Costs are similar with the Bafang and Ananda systems.

100km for 12.5c and a fraction of the carbon output of a car. Yes, this is the future of personal transport.

Q. How often should I service my Electric Bike?

The same as we would recommend for any bicycle.

We recommend your electric bike is serviced during the first 3 months of ownership as components bed in. Frequency of servicing after that depends on usage and what maintenance you choose to do yourself in terms of caring for the chain and other basic tasks. A regular rider who does not perform any maintenance may benefit from servicing every 6 months. Click here for more information on servicing.

Q. How can I safely handle and use a Li-ion Electric Bike battery?

Lithium Ion batteries are a powerful technology that have given us handy cordless tools and devices from mobile phones and laptops, to power drills, vacuum cleaners and now electric bikes.

This is an increasingly common power source that is here to stay, and is safe if handled properly. Read our full safety guide here.

    Good for the price

Rides okay for the price. Battery life is fairly short - need to constantly recharge. The brakes are not great. If looking for something to go greater than 20k per day than look at spending more.

    Blacktop review

For the price, I think it is a very good bike. The electrical assist cuts in when I need it so it takes a lot of the work out of cycling up hills.

I would have given it 5 stars but for the low gearing that I feel will hold my speed back when I get back to strength. Admittedly it is a computer bike but I felt an extra gear would help.
