ELECTRIC BIKE BUYING GUIDE
eBikes have been available in Europe for a while now but sales have increased ten-fold over the past six years. Much of this growth has come from increased awareness but also improvements in performance and aesthetics driven by advances in battery technology.
Australia has always been behind on these advances as we couldn’t import from the key markets driving developments in electric bikes. In May 2012 however, the Australian government adopted European rule (EN 15194:2009) for permitted power output of electric bikes from 200 to 250 watts. With the adoption of this common standard we are at last now seeing the better international bikes becoming available here in Australia.
Reid Cycles is now bringing one of these leading premium European eBike systems to Australian riders as the exclusive distributor for German brand, Corratec. Fully built by Corratec in Germany, these eBikes are powered by the industry leading Bosch system to deliver fast charging, reliable performance and a smooth riding experience.
Reid Cycles chose to partner with Corratec as the bikes are proven performers and the Bosch system is the industry leader. Bosch now also offers a local support centre in Australia to handle any issues with their pedelec systems. Bosch is the first and only eBike system manufacturer to offer this level of service to Australian riders.

HOW TO CHOOSE AN ELECTRIC BIKE
Q. WHAT IS AN EBIKE?
An eBike features an electric motor powered by a rechargeable battery. The system is either throttle driven or pedal assist. You ride a pedal assist (pedelec) eBike by pedalling as normal, but the electric motor adds power to each pedal stroke - flattening out the hills and getting you up to speed without the effort.
Q. ADVANTAGES OF EBIKES
eBikes make it easier to ride more. You can go further, get there faster, easily carry more and spend less energy. If you’re riding trails on an electric Mountain Bike, this means you can spend more time on the descents and cover more ground in your day.
Q. HOW FAST DOES AN EBIKE GO
eBikes in Australia are limited to 250w and will assist you up to 25km/hr - going faster than this is up to the effort of the rider. Any motor providing more power will be classified as a motorbike and must be registered and ridden by a licenced rider.
Q. HOW FAR CAN I TRAVEL ON A FULL CHARGE
The range you can expect on a full charge depends on the rider, how much luggage you’re carrying, terrain and the power setting. Under standard commuting conditions you can expect a range of 90km (under ideal conditions it has been shown to travel 140 kilometres).
Q. HOW DO I CHARGE AN EBIKE
Simply plug the charger into a standard wall socket at work or when you get home. A full charge with the Bosch system takes around 3 hours, but most of the time you’ll just need to top up rather than completely refill.
Q. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO CHARGE?
The Corratec bikes use a 400Wh battery. At 30c/kWh x 0.4kWh = .12c for a full charge.
Q. CAN I SWITCH OFF THE ENGINE AND RIDE IT LIKE NORMAL?
Yes. Remove the battery pack and it will feel very much like a normal bike.
Q. WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF A MID-MOUNT MOTOR ARRANGEMENT?
The mid-mount design means that the full gear range of the bicycle can be used and the centre of gravity is lowered, giving a more stable ride.
Q. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ACTIVE AND PERFORMANCE LINE BOSCH MOTORS?
Corratec bikes are fitted with either the Active Line motor for commute style riding or the Performance Line motor for off-road trail riding or touring where more torque is required to get over variable terrain. Both motors offer the same top speed. The Performance Line system is more expensive, hence the higher price on these models.
Q. WHAT IS THE WARRANTY FOR BOSCH BATTERY PERFORMANCE?
All batteries naturally reduce in capacity over time - even quality Lithium Ion batteries as used in the Bosch system. Bosch guarantee the battery will have more than 70% capacity after 2 years or 500 full recharge cycles (whichever comes first).
Q. WHY CHOOSE A CORRATEC BIKE BUILT WITH THE BOSCH SYSTEM?
Corratec are widely known in European racing for testing their equipment at the highest levels of professional Mountain Biking and Road Cycling disciplines.
Corratec eBikes are designed and built in Germany using the latest Bosch mid-mount motors. Bosch is the leader in electric bike motor systems offering long battery life, quick charging, near silent operation and smooth power delivery.
Bosch eBike systems are now supported with a local Australian service centre to quickly resolve any issues. No other system manufacturer currently offers this level of service to Australian riders.
