At Reid Cycles, we love a good challenge and we love inspiring people to do something they never thought they could. From hundreds of applicants we chose three inspiring riders to lead Team Reid on the Around the Bay Challenge 2016.
As Melbourne's most iconic ride with a distance for everyone, Around the Bay is a great way for anyone and everyone to get fit, cycle more or even just challenge themselves.
Our Team Leader for the 50km distance is Shayna. She's excited to be taking on this challenge as a motivation to get into shape for her wedding. Find out more about Shayna and follow her journey Around the Bay.
Shayna will be riding our Women's Osprey Road Bike, specifically designed with the female cyclist in mind. Traditionally bikes are built for the male-dominated industry, however, we have a great range of women's active bikes created with female-friendly designs to encourage more women around Australia to get fit by jumping on a bike.
Tell us a bit about yourself...
I’m a Kiwi. I moved to Melbourne with my Fiancé in January from New Zealand. I currently work for the Academy of Makeup at their head office, but also work as a Freelance Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist for weddings and special occasions.
How would you describe your current fitness level? What are your current views on leading a fit and healthy lifestyle?
I am very into living a fit and healthy lifestyle. I like to keep fit and look after my body with regular exercise and healthy eating (although indulging once in a while doesn't hurt!) I like to change up my workout routine and do a lot of different things such as yoga, running, boot camps, weight training and now cycling!
What is your cycling experience? What’s the furthest distance you've ever cycled?
To be honest I don’t have much cycling experience at all. I haven't owned a bike since I was a child so the only riding I have done has been on a stationary bike at the gym. I had been wanting to get into cycling to try something new, so had just borrowed a friends bike prior to entering this competition. So far the furthest distance I have cycled would be today's ride (31st July) at 17.8km. It wasn't as hard as I thought, so I’m looking forward to making progress on this distance!
What do you hope to achieve by completing Melbourne’s most iconic ride? Why did you decide to take on this challenge?
For one, I am hoping to achieve my furthest cycling distance yet! I took on this challenge to try something new, give me something to work towards, and to also (hopefully) get me in shape for my wedding next year!
What are you most excited about when it comes to the Around the Bay Challenge 2016? What are your biggest fears?
I’m most excited to about the sense of achievement I will get from finishing the race, and also having an amazing team to train and ride with. My biggest fear is probably coming off my bike on a busy road.
Why should people get involved in Around the Bay and join the Team Reid for your distance?
Everyone should get involved in Around the Bay as it is a great way to challenge yourself with something new, increase your fitness, and meet new people! The 50km is a great distance for beginners like myself to give cycling a go, and they might just find out it's something they really enjoy!
